In the presence of alderman Eelco Eerenberg, housing corporation Portaal symbolically signed a letter of intent with the Cartesius development consortium (MRP and Ballast Nedam Development) at PROVADA for the realisation of Baunei with over 382 affordable homes totalling about 23,000 m2 GO in Cartesius Utrecht. Of the 382 homes, 308 are for social rent with an average of 58 m2 and 74 are for the free sector suitable for medium rent. Within the 308 social homes, 173 are intended for Portaal's Mixed Living concept and 135 for regular social rented homes. The consortium is already working with Portaal in Cartesius for Okinawa with 165 social rental homes in Cartesius, construction of which has recently started.

Baunei with 382 affordable homes for third phase in Cartesius
The name of the building block in the third development phase is a reference to Baunei in Sardinia in Italy. Baunei is in the province of Nuoro, which is one of the Blue Zones. These are places in the world where people live healthier and happier lives for longer, an important source of inspiration for Cartesius Utrecht. In addition to housing for regular house seekers, Baunei will also house a Mixed Living concept by Portaal. This is a form of housing in which residents with and without assisted living consciously choose to live together in an organised setting.
Sander Heinsman, Chairman of Portaal's Executive Board: "𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘉𝘢𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘪, 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘱 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘫𝘰𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳. Mixed housing is an indispensable form of housing to help tenants leaving social care or sheltered housing settle into their new living environment. Mixed Housing also meets the need of regular house seekers to live in a neighbourhood where neighbours are involved with each other. Portaal is also exploring the possibility of developing housing for the elderly within Baunei. This provides an answer to the growing demand for housing forms for the elderly while at the same time boosting circulation in the housing market. The inner garden of Baunei will be designed with a semi-public character, a balance between tranquillity and bustle connected to Cartesius Park. www.cartesius-utrecht.nl
