MRP signs Cartesius convenant: A Catalyst for a Healthy and Economically Strong Society

The transition to a health economy is taking concrete shape in Cartesius, Utrecht. A breakthrough coalition of businesses, research institutions, government agencies, and new financial partner Rabobank is working together to develop health-focused innovations in neighborhoods, as well as to monitor and study their long-term impact on health and well-being. Cartesius serves as a catalyst in this effort and, thanks in part to the municipality’s focus on healthy urban living for all, is the first area development project to lay the foundation for a vibrant, economically strong, and resilient society. Bart Meijer, CEO and owner of MRP: “It is of international importance that a healthy and sustainable living environment is the central focus in area development projects. This requires a multidisciplinary approach and great flexibility from all parties involved. With Cartesius, we have set this movement in motion.”

With the addition of Rabobank, the partnership is strengthened by a cooperative partner that has been actively contributing to neighborhood development for many years. With the signing of the second “Building a Healthy Neighborhood” Covenant, the partners are strengthening their collaboration to further explore how the living environment can be designed more intelligently as the key to a longer, healthier, and happier life for everyone.

Long-term research on healthy living environments

The first agreement, signed in 2023, has provided greater insight into the effectiveness of health interventions in the physical, social, and healthcare domains. Researchers and partners are monitoring how interventions in the living environment influence health, well-being, and social connection. This is being done through, among other things:

• active involvement of residents in developing and testing interventions;

• long-term monitoring of the neighborhood and residents’ well-being;

• application of new measurement tools and data-driven analysis methods.

The knowledge gained accelerates the transition to healthy and future-proof cities and provides concrete tools for the current construction challenges in the Netherlands, with lessons that are also applicable internationally.

Cartesius Utrecht thus serves as a living lab for healthy urban development, where scientific knowledge, spatial design, and social innovation converge. Thanks to the collaboration outlined in the first agreement, interventions aimed at improving health and quality of life can already be systematically measured, monitored, and further developed. In the coming years, Cartesius Utrecht will continue to carry out a series of research programs in collaboration with residents. The Utrecht approach is also attracting significant international attention. Thanks in part to Cartesius, Utrecht is part of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Pioneering Places Programme, in which cities worldwide collaborate on solutions to major urban challenges such as health, housing, and infrastructure.

Public-Private Partnership on Health in the Living Environment

The agreement brings together a broad group of stakeholders from the business community, academia, and government, including area developers Ballast Nedam Development and MRP, the City of Utrecht, NS Stations, UMC Utrecht, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, Utrecht University, housing association Portaal, CBRE Investment Management Netherlands, and new partner Rabobank from the financial sector.

The bank is investing in projects for a future-proof living environment and is joining Cartesius to gain evidence-based knowledge about what does and does not work in healthy urban living. For Rabobank, the agreement is a way to collaborate with other parties to gather valuable insights for new area developments and investment decisions in the Netherlands.

Cartesius Utrecht as a Healthy Living Environment

Cartesius Utrecht is being developed as an innovative urban neighborhood where insights from international research on healthy and happy living are applied to a modern urban context. The new urban neighborhood combines, among other things, high housing density with space for social interaction and physical activity, sustainable mobility and low parking standards, abundant greenery and biodiversity, and a strong focus on social cohesion and community building. By structurally linking these elements to scientific research, a unique practical environment is created in which health and well-being are made systematic and measurable.
